Home :: Integrating Satellite TV in to your Computer System :: You Are Here
Integrating satellite TV into your computer system is simply a logical
progression in the world of technology and computer systems. Since the
industrial revolution, we, as a society, have learned that the growth of
technology builds on previous technological growth and it does this at an
accelerated rate to the point that the acceleration is almost logarithmic
in scope. In today’s age, the prevalence of computers in society expedites
this logarithmic growth even further. In part, this growth has allowed
technology to overlap between technological advancements that had existed
separately and whose growth was previously independent of another.
One such interrelation has been the use of a computer as a surrogate
entertainment system. Because computer media players have evolved to a
high degree and computer sound cards have also evolved, a computer can
easily be used as an entertainment system, playing CDs and DVDs with
perfect picture and sound quality. This concept was expanded further by
the broadcast media as radio stations started broadcasting their signal
over the Internet. This novel concept allows local radio stations to
broadcast on a worldwide basis for a tiny fraction of the cost of
broadcasting on a very localized level. As such, it is no surprise that
satellite TV has started to make inroads in the Internet broadcasting
game.
PC Tuner Cards along with you satellite receiver makes
it possible to watch your satellite TV on your PC. These self-contained
system includes all the software needed to capture, control, and
manipulate the reception, recording, and playback of programs from
satellite sources offering satellite tv programming on your PC system.”
That sounds like a fairly revolutionary item. In a way, it is
revolutionary, but it has not caught on with the masses to the degree one
would expect in our computer dominated and oriented world. If people spend
so much time in front of the PC and then spend another block of time
sitting in front of the TV, one would assume that the fusion of the two
would be a logical progression. So why hasn’t it caught on like wildfire?
Perhaps people resist using the computer as an alternative to the TV
because the PC represents work and school and videogames in their heads.
The TV represents viewing entertainment. The ability to fuse the two
remains a disconnected concept in people’s heads. This is a psychological
component that will more than likely disappear over time as computer
technology continues to grow by leaps and bounds and continues to
integrate itself into many more facets of life.
In a way, the propagation of computers into various different multitudes
of machines was ominously foreshadowed in the cold war science-fiction
classic film COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT where the self aware computer
integrated itself into other electronic mediums to spy on humans to keep
them from harming one another, as it felt that humans could never be
trusted when left to their own devices.
In our world, computers are not self aware, but they continually propagate
themselves further and further into other electronic mediums. This is not
done to keep an eye on humans, but rather to make life more convenient for
them. That’s why the media player is on your computer. It also makes for a
fine perk in helping to sell the PC.
In time, satellite TV will be integrated heavily into home computers
because it is a purely logical progression of technological advancement.
It is also a fairly simple process to perform as all that is required is
installing some software. But, it is not convenience that will be the
interesting facet of this; it will be watching the television and cable
landscape be altered forever by the inclusion of what has the potential to
be one of the most radical advancements of the computer age.
