Satellite TV Offers Dish Net HD-DVR?» Dish Net HD-DVR?I have a Dish Network DVR received - and just bought an HD TV!! About a month ago, I wanted to upgrade my receiver to and HD-DVR receiver, but they wanted $400 for the receiver, so I did nothing. I just checked the website today and they are offering the HD-DVR receiver on the same terms as my DVR receiver for NEW customers, but existing customers are supposed to go purchase one from their local retailer… So, I called up their lovely customer service line and was told that the above was true for NOW, but on February 1st they are announcing a new promotion on HD-DVR and it will be GOOD??? That’s all they would say. Anybody have any ideas what this will be? Comments (15) -> “Dish Net HD-DVR?”

Yea, I have been hearing the same thing. I do know they have a new mpeg4 HD receiver, but i don’t know what the special is going to be yet. As soon as i can get the info i will post it.
i have talked to dish cust service three times so far the past couple days, because the dvr i have in the main room, needs to be changed to a hd dvr for the new tv, they told me i can put my current dvr in another room, and use the hd reciever in the main room, however, if i want to have the hd/dvr in the main room, (which is why i called to begin with), i can purchase it for approx $800. so now, do i go to direct tv with the deal they have, or
wait for a possible deal with dish? dish does not seem to be interested in keeping people.
I agree with you. The dish folks have not seem very interested in maintaining good service for existing customers. I would suggest holding off til Feb 1 - as the csr person i talked to this weekend said they are addressing this problem with the new promotion scheduled for that day. I just wish somebody had a clue what that is supposed to be!!!
OK, here is the deal, i spoke to dish this morning, and they told me on Feb 1, the will start a deal for current customers of $299, for the hd/dvr 942 unit. they said i must wait until that date to sign up for it. that sounds pretty good to me, but, i will wait to see all the details, before i say for sure.
Hold-Up, The thing is, the old HD receivers will be limited as the HD format is changing to mpeg4.
Both Dish Network and Directv are changing thier HD format in order to offer more HD channels.
On Feb 1, Dish is starting to offer a new line of HD Receivers and discontinuing the 942…. So they are really just trying to unload stock.
The HD-811 is being replaced by the ViP-211 and the HD-DVR 942 is being replaced by the ViP 622 DVR HD Dual-Tuner MPEG-4 Receiver.
Here’s more information regarding DISH Network’s new top-of-the-line HD, dual-tuner DVR receiver features:
MPEG-4 & MPEG-2 functionality.

TV 2: View and record standard definition or down-converted HD programming.
TV 1 display supports four resolutions: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i.
TV 2 display resolution: 480i.

Digital off-air broadcast viewing and recording, including HD.
But don’t new customers get the same thing for free? I know that Dish has more HD programming and for a very slightly lower price, and DirecTV is charging 299 to new customers for the HD-DVR - so I hate to think of having to change. But is it FAIR??? Wah Wah Wah!!
Yea that is true, but with this new format (mpeg-4) and the Huge expansion of HD Channels you will end up needing the new mpeg-4 receiver anyway sooner-or-later.
I personally would rather spend a few extra bucks now and have it all.
Directv’s new mpeg-4 receiver will probably be more than the 299 price.
Directv is almost always a few bucks more because they feel superior because they were first on the block and they do have a couple channels that Dish does not have access to. Like the NFL Sunday ticket.
Both Dish and Direct are making a move to offer all locals in HD in every city. When it comes to your city, you will need the new receiver.
just for the heck of it i called direct TV this morning to find out their deal right now, here it is; $399 for an hd/dvr with mpeg4 capabilities, 200 hrs st recd, with a $100 rebate, now i have the complete package with dish, and i pay 102 a month, but that is without hd service which is the reason i am looking, direct told me it would be 118 a month after the first three months, which would be 66 a month. so i am at a standstill, i don’t know which way to go, should i wait and see if dish will do anything special for current users, or just take the deal with direct?
I would wait till the end of next week only because DISH provides more HD channels. So if their deal is comparable for existing customers you would actually come out ahead.
I am happy to see that Directv is keeping the new receiver at a reasonable price. If you do choose to just go ahead and get Directv please check out the recommended retailer on this page.

Also, make sure you specify that you want the mpeg4 HD DVR.
Looks like I need to update the site with all this new information.
Now I just got off the phone with Directv and they told me that the New HD-DVR mpeg4 receiver was 499.00 with a 200.00 mail in rebate.
It all ends up being the same 299 but i just thought it was a little funny.
Again, if you decide to get this make sure you make it absolutely clear on the equipment you want to the phone rep. It is a new product and you might find the phone rep to be not quite as informed as you would hope.
thank you david, i will wait until next week to see the dish deal, it is strange about the price thing on direct, i did get the guys name, just in case.
I get my information from many different resources and try to wait before i change pages on my site till i get the same info from everyone.
That is why i used the phone number to contact them, so i could see what the phone rep knew. I was surprised that the phone rep did know about the new receiver, but she was not real convincing that she knew the deal. I was put on hold three times for her to check. But, that was also reassuring because that told me she did not just tell me what i wanted to hear. She really tried to get the facts.
Just so you know, I to want this new receiver and i am waiting to see. Anytime they have new equipment you will find the information you receive is a little inconsistant.
so i took the deal yesterday from dish, i.e. the VIP 622 hd/dvr for 299 and a rental fee of $6.00mth
it took forever for the csr to answer all my questions, and she had to keep putting me on hold, at the end i told her the next customer would be easier with her knew found knowledge. what really annoys me, is that they are making me wait three weeks for the deliver and installation of the box and a new dish they said i would need.
Well, I am happy to hear you did get the process going to get the new vip HD receiver. I now have a ton of emails to get out to people who have been asking about this.
Yesterday i did get to update this site and my other Satellite TV site http://www.satellitetv-site.com/
I do still need to update the HD channel pages, but i am wanting to get all the facts straight.
Dish has rolled out some nice HD channel packages that are combined with non HD channels.
So, after today i will have everything updated on both sites and will also be rolling out emails to everyone who has asked.
It is frustrating when new equipment is offered because of the wait.
I can tell you a very long story about Dish, but I will give the short-short version. I have spent several hours on the phone with Dish during the past 2 months. If you don’t get the answer you want from Dish, just call back…is what I have been told.
I was told during several phone calls that Dish would give me the ViP622 receiver for free. I told them that I was going to drop the service and this is the offer they gave me. Well, I thought I was good to go. I called them on Feb. 1 early in the AM to be one of the first to get the offer. I had to go through 1 rep, 1 supervisor, and then to 1 executive director, and then I finally got the answer I was looking for, the 622 for free. I thought all was right with the world. Then I get a call from a local Dish installer and set up an appointment for the 15th of Feb. Well, I get a call the week before from Dish saying that they can NOT honor that offer, and that I would have to pay the $299.00 for the receiver and then have an 18 mo. contract on top of that. I was hot to say the least. I then spent the next week documenting my phone calls, but I got no where fast. I finally got a director to offer me one month of free service, so I bit and took the offer. All dish was going to do was have the individuals that made me the free offer call me up and say they were sorry. So long story short, I now have my Vip622, but I have had problems with it for the past 2 nights. I had to do a front panel reset in order to fix the sound synch problem on TV2 and the sound but no picture on TV1. I hope this is not something I have to do each time I watch TV from now on.
Don’t get me wrong, I love DISH and the technology, but I just wish that one hand knew what the other hand was doing.
Sincerely,
Mike
