Email sent in by Mary about DVR Recorders

I am currently a DirecTV customer and would like to upgrade to the DVR. I have several question.

I was reading and saw where Dave said something about having to pay extra for TIVO. Does that mean that the DVR that you get from DirecTV doesn’t work unless you subscribe to this?

If I should upgrade to the DVR and still have my second receiver do I have to pay 4.99 for each of them? If I bought two DVR would it then just be 4.99 extra each month?

I have thought about switching to Dish Network, but I left Dish a couple of years ago because when they installed my dish they didn’t run new wire and used my existing outside wire that wasn’t for Satellite and we had troubles all the time. When I got DirecTV they ran new wire and never have had the problem again. Would I be a new customer if I go back and if not would I then have to buy all the equipment again myself as I don’t have dish equipment anymore. I left in good standing with Dish I was never late paying my bill.

So how much would it cost me to switch back to Dish?

One more question if I would stay with DirecTV and the DVR works without paying anything extra can I use unhook my receivers I have now and hook the dvr up myself and just call into DirecTV to give them the new box numbers or is there more to it?

Thanks! Mary

My Reply:

Mary, I hope i don’t miss any of your questions.

1) Tivo is a subscription so no matter what you will pay the $4.99 per month.
2) Directv charges the $4.99 for the second receiver to receive programming, so, if you bought two directv dvr’s powered by tivo machines… you would be charged $4.99 for the 2nd receivers programming and $4.99 for your Tivo Service. The Tivo service charge would only be the $4.99 and not $4.99 for each tivo.
3) I’m not 100% sure how Dish is handling the Previous Customer Issue these day’s…. It seems to me they would need to change their stance sooner or later… But, as far as i know they still consider a previous customer not eligible for free equipment.
4) If you get NEW Directv DVR Tivo Receivers (not the tivo receiver by itself) Then yes you could hook them up and call it in. You would then cancel your existing receivers. You would be charged the $4.99 for the TiVo Service though.

Note: Directv is going to be offering the DVR for free starting October , so if i where you i would wait before i bought anything. They will probably offer something to existing customers like Dish Does.

Also, Dish has a promotion for existing customers and with you being a previous customer in good standing, they might allow you to qualify for that. What it does is allow existing customers the ability to get new equipment at a discount. So, if you are considering this option, call 1-866-668-8047 and tell them what you want to do and see if they can qualify you. It’s worth a try…

The number i gave is kind of a back door number and bypasses all the automated stuff and takes you directly to customer service.

I hope i answered all your questions and if i haven’t or if you have more let me know.

Dave
