Question from Tom in Sandiego

Im confused over what the current state of receiving new york and la feeds is as of 4/2005. I was under the impression that if your signal was less than grade B with a fixed position outdoor antenna, you could get a waiver from your local stations to have direct or dish provide the network feeds. Is this still true? Ive also been told by a local talk show host I know, that he gets network feeds as a “professional courtesy” since he discusses timely events. How does direct/dish verify this type of arrangement.

My Reply:

Hi Tom, This is how the terms reads.

“† Under the Satellite Home Viewer Improvement Act (SHVIA) DIRECTV is permitted to transmit non-local feeds of major broadcast networks “for private home viewing” to “persons who reside in unserved households”. “Private home viewing” is defined as “viewing, for private use in a household by means of satellite reception equipment which is operated by an individual in that household and which serves only that household.” An “unserved household” is defined as one that receives less than a Grade B signal from local TV stations. SHVIA requires that DIRECTV use the Individual Location Longley-Rice (”ILLR”) model to determine whether a customer resides in an unserved household. ”

So… if Directv can provide your local networks you can get them, it’s your choice. However, if DIRECTV does not carry your local network channels and you have a “Grade B” or less signal from an antenna then you are eligible to receive distant locals. If i am not mistaken they are not as stringent as in the past about this. If you are eligible for local channels for your area then you can not receive distant locals. That is a Government Regulation.

This is a post someone made on my site about this and how unhappy he was with that government regulation. Click Here

I haven’t really heard anything about your friends situation, but it sounds logical although some might view it as a little unfair. Me… hey…if you can get it then great, so I’m maybe a little jealous…i love to get some distant locals. :)

I hope this answered your question and if not please reply. Thanks for visiting Kaptain Satellite
