Question sent in by Bill A. (a previous Voom Customer)

hello,
I am considering taking advantage of dish network’s current offer for new customers. I am currently a VOOM customer ( at least until April 30 when they will ceased service) and have RG-6 cables run in finished walls.

I would like your opinion regarding which receivers to use and any comments about installation. There are 2 RG-6 cables run to the living room. One is from a HD off air antenna and the other is an output from a switchbox (2 LNB ins and 4 outputs). The other run is to an upstairs bedroom. There are 2 RG-6 cables run to the bedroom. One is from another seperate HD off air antenna and the other is another output from the switchbox.

I want to use a 942 HD receiver as the main receiver in the living room because I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi HD projection television with 1080i DVI. I also want to have DVR capability. I am aware of the ability to have 2 TVs run off of this receiver but I do not want to run any extra cabling. Therefore I want to use a HD 811 receiver in the bedroom and do not need any DVR capability.

Could you please e mail me your opinions, comments and suggestions as to what would be the best components for my installation needs? I have also become aware of Dish network’s SUPER DISH and the DISH PRO PLUS using the DISH DPP SEPARATOR. Should I need these components as well?

I understand that I will pay a premium of $250.00 for the HD 942 and will get the HD 811 and installation for “free” as well as the TOP180 programming package for three months for the TOP 60 price and the HD programming free for 6 months.

Please respond as soon as you can. I have 1 week to make up my mind between Dish or Directv.

Thank you in advance,
Bill

My Reply:

Hi Bill, I had to read your email a couple times to get a visual in my mind.

It sounds a little more complicated than it is. Your installation should be fairly simple.

Scenario 1 - The installer would install the DISH 500 and could run Two RG-6 cables to your switch box… then bypass the switch box and barrel the two new wires to two existing RG-6 cables that go to your bedroom and living room.

Scenario 2 - The installer could use the same location your VOOM Dish is mounted. Remove the VOOM Dish and install the NEW DISH Network Dish and use the same RG-6 cables you used for VOOM and still disconnect the switch.

Without seeing the switch i could not say if it can stay connected, so i mentioned bypassing it.

As i am sure you know, you will be able to use your HD off air antenna with these receivers also.

I checked your location with the area code in your email and it looks to me you are located in Indiana. So, you should not need a Super Dish. The Supper Dish Series is for some states to receive local programming.

Just an FYI: Echo Star the Corporation that owns DISH Network Purchased VOOM a couple month ago. I would assume they would use those resources to offer more HD Programming with DISH.

It sounds as if you know the promotions well and you are correct, 1 HD DVR 942, 1 HD 811, Top 180 Pac for the 60 Pac Price for the fist three months and FREE HD Programming for six months. It does not look to me like you need the Super Dish (unless i am wrong on your location).

Hope this helps and if you have more questions let me know.

BTW: You can use this number when ordering 1-888-814-4425 , online ordering will not provide an option for the 942 receiver. So when ordering - specify the 811 and the 942.

Again thanks for your question and let me know if you have more questions.
