Dish Network Newbie Questions

Thanks for a great site. Been reading it for a couple of days now.

Right now I have comcast cable and we are thinking about switching over to Dish Network.

1- We want the 4 DVRs - Does that mean I get 4 free DVR like the 625 or is that only the first one and the other 3 are downgraded - Like to have 4 dual DVRs?

2 - We do get snow and some heavy rains here in South Jersey how much does that effect the reception?

3 - My wife is a recording manic. She normally has 3-4 vcrs recording every night during prime time. Will she be able to record and watch at the same time on a single tv?

4 - If she records something on the bedroom DVR will she be able to watch it in the living room DVR?

5 - Does each dual DVR need two cables coming into from the satellite?

6 - Will I need DSL filters for each DVR?

7 - Is it better to order from Dish or one of the installers?

Thank you for any comments

Rick

    Hi Rick,
I’m happy to hear you like my site.

    1) You want DVR’s on four TV’s. Dish would give you one DVR 625 and two DVR 510’s. The DVR 625 is a Dual Tuner DVR. The 625 is a new DVR just released a week or so ago. I Hope to have time this week to add a page about this DVR and remove the page about the DVR 522.

    2) I lived in Boston Mass. for a few years and they get heavy snow storms. I never had any fade or any problems at all with my signal. As long as the installation is done correctly you should not have any problems.

I now live in Louisiana and we have extremely bad thunder storms and occasionally i will have a drop in signal here.

3)Wow, that’s allot of recording…. On the DVR 625 you can record on one of the tuners and watch something different on the other tuner. The DVR 510 is a single tuner, so… you can only record the channel that the DVR is tunned to.

    4) Ok… you have four TV’s and two Dual DVR’s… each DVR controls two of your TV’s… So as long as the bedroom and the living room are on the same DVR then you would be able to share recorded programming.

    5) The Dual Tuner DVR’s do need two cables coming from the Satellite Dish. The Single Tuner DVR 510 only needs one.

    6) Yes, if you have DSL you will need a filter for the phone line connected to that DVR.

    7) You want to know if it is best to order from DISH or one of the installers.

well, by installer do you mean an actual installer or a retailer?

If you mean retailer then it really does not matter. The retailers i have recommended on my site, i know to give a little more personal attention. While Dish (the corporation) is very large and receive thousands of call every day. The retailers also receive allot of calls but, i know when i call them they are very helpful and personal. I am never on hold more than a minute or two.

I hope i have answered all your questions, but if you need more questions answered let me know. Just reply in the comment section below. I’ll leave it open for a couple day’s.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the replies. I have a problem. My wife wants to be able to record all of her shows and watch them on one tv. In one night she could be taping 3 shows in the same time slot. Later she would just put the other tapes into her vcr. Any ideas how to do this? I’ll asked this but I would think the answer is no. Can she still use a vcr to record and have the vcr record different channels at different times?

    Thanks for your help

    Rick

    Hi Rick,
I had a feeling that would be a problem.

Any time you are recording different channels at the same time, each recorder would need it’s own line from the dish.

So any time your wife would want to record different channels at the same time, she would need to record them on different TV’s.

So.. i am assuming this is what she has been doing?

I have an idea that would make this work, but it is kind of complicated and would take a good bit of extra wiring. It might be easier to just record every thing on a VCR.

If you want i could sketch my thought out so you could accomplish this, but like i said it would take some extra wiring for each TV and it might be a pain in the butt to operate. :)

    let me know…

FYI: I have all comments on delay, meaning i approve all comments posted… this is because of all the spammers.

So.. if you post a comment it will show up after i see it… Sorry for the delay.

Ah, Knowledge is a wonderful thing. I didn’t know about the delay. Sorry about the multi-posts.

I had a crazy thought. If she wanted to record three shows say 8-9pm EST and we had a dual DVR, the DVR could record two shows. Would it be able to record the third show say later like it would catch it on the west coast? Does it work that way?

Many thanks - Sorry about all of the Q’s. I really want the Dish and she is fighting me. Tired of cable problems.

    Hi Rick, not a problem.

She could record two of the programs but not the third on that DVR. So, no it really does not work that way. Way back when the big thing was c-band Satellite (The huge Dishes) this would have been possible.

Even thou you might not get all her needs met with all the recording she does. She would still have many benefits by having the DVR, like being able to rewind live TV and pause live TV. Those two benefits have changed the way i watch TV and now i have to have it that way.

You can send all the questions you want, it not only helps you, but it will help someone else who reads this post.
