This question was mailed in by Marc about a VOOM Alternative

With Voom coming to an end on April 30th I am struggling to find a new HDTV provider. I liked the Voom service and I am now hooked on HD. We have two HD ready TV’s and I would like to ask a few questions concerning the best choice between Direct TV and Dish.

With Voom I was able to recieve local broadcast in both SD and HD with an off air antenna. Will I be able to get my local chanels that broadcast in HD with Direct TV or Dish? FOX, CBS, NBC, PBS…

I do not subscribe to the movie channels but will use PPV. Who offers the better choice Direct TV or Dish?

What is the future for HDTV for with Direct TV and Dish Network? Which of these two are better prepared to expand HD in the future with no additional cost to the consumer?

I like the package price with Dish Network but have concerns about their HD offering.

Thanks,

Marc

My Reply:

Hi Marc, Both Satellite TV Providers are working on offering more HD channels. they are both in a good position.

EchoStar, the owner of DISH Network Purchased VOOM and i would assume they will integrate that service into the HD Programming they now offer.

DIRECTV just launched another satellite that is for more HD channels.

Neither DISH or DIRECT has given a date for new HD channels to be added. They both offer the same channels in HD with the exception of DIRECT TV offers The NFL Sunday Ticket in HD and DISH does not offer that Channel. The only one that offers a local Channel with HD is DISH and That channel is CBS. Both DISH Network and DIRECTV allow you to integrate an Antenna with the satellite for HD locals.

If The NFL Sunday Ticket is not important to you then i think DISH has a better DEAL. DISH will give You a FREE HDTV Receiver and DIRECTV will Charge you $299.00.

It is a tuff choice because both providers are positioning themselves to offer plenty of HD Programming. With HD TV’s getting more affordable more people will be looking at this option.

I hope this has helped and if you have more questions let me know. I’ll add a few pages this
week about HD Programming.

thanks for your question.

His Reply

I was leaning towards Dish Network because of the equipment cost. Neither Dish or Direct TV are very clear on their HD offerings. It may be they do not want to confuse the consumer with too much detail. Direct TV on their web page states that they are offering CBS, FOX and NBC in East or West selection but as long as I can get HD local with off air ant. that is fine.

Thanks for your quick response.

My Reply

Marc, The DIRECTV and HD locals is news to me, thanks. I’m going to do some homework on this - this week.

FYI: Dish Network has a Dual Tuner Receiver that is HD and DVR Combined they did list it for $699 but last week they started offering it for $250 to new Subscribers.

I just added it to my site last week DVR 942

The Standard HD 811 Receivers are Free

So.. if your leaning towards DISH Check it out.

Again thanks for your Question.
