Satellite TV Offers Direct TV intensifying fight against satellite TV pirates» Direct TV intensifying fight against satellite TV piratesDirect TV announced yesterday that it filled a lawsuit against seven people and other unnamed individuals in Ford Lauderdale’s US District Court. All are accused of setting up falsified subscription accounts and fraudulently activating receivers for other customers. It is supposed that they were responsible for hundreds of cards and receivers illegally activated. Direct TV officials claim to have few more investigations underway that they are willing to bring to federal court. According to the current law the company is entitled to actual damages or statutory damages anywhere in the range from $10,000 to $100,000, not speaking about covering all costs and fees connected with the lawsuit. Clearly the main aim of DirecTV is to send a clear signal to the satellite signal pirates that their actions will no more be tolerated. It is pretty sure that more and more such cases will be brought to light in coming months as DirecTV will intensify its anti pirating activities. Similar case from the September 2004 against two people in Utah is still pending, though, and most of the cases brought up so far are only concerning small-range pirates. It will be a bull’s eye only if DirecTV will ever be able to uncover the people who are at the top of the large-scale pirating business.
