Satellite TV Offers Will Dolan raise Voom from the dead with HDTV services?» Will Dolan raise Voom from the dead with HDTV services?Chuck Dolan, chairman of Cablevision, has still high hopes for Voom and HDTV services, even after he was forced to sell Voom satellite to its rival EchoStar. Dolan is now heading a group that wants to purchase the remaining assets of Voom, a Satellite TV Service project he enforced at Cablevision that cost over $1 billion and had only 26.000 subscribers signed up. He wants to use these assets to continue the Voom HDTV service with almost 40 high definition channels. How will be Dolan with his Voom able to compete with satellite TV giants that have about one thousand times the number of customers that Voom has? Despite being in a short-term advantage, he might have hard times to make his dream come true. Direct TV for example will start offering local HDTV in twelve markets this summer, and plans to launch four new satellites by 2007 that will be used to transmit up to 150 national HDTV channels. Dolan’s fight for Voom survival might as well only prolong the life of struggling project, but most of the current Voom subscribers will probably not agree. Large part of them being enthusiasts into new technologies, they are already on high on the recent news and filling the internet discussion groups, blogs and boards with passionate comments and prophecies coming rather from their hearts than heads.
