Satellite TV Offers Direct TV rates to go up in March» Direct TV rates to go up in MarchDirect TV customers will see their satellite TV rates going up. Base prices will go up by $2 to $3 effective March. Jade Ekstedt, representative for DirecTV, blamed the higher cost on the programmers for channels they distribute as the prevailing reason for the fee increase. Along with the rising fees for the channels Direct TV is distributing, the satellite TV industry has seen legislation changes bringing in additional costs in the millions. DirecTV says it is not afraid of losing any customers - their clients will not be the only ones seeing their rates for television services go up. It’s already widely known, Dish Network is raising its rates by $3 - $4 for their basic packages. The price increases are expected to have no effect on the number of subscribers, as there is no cable company that offers lower fees than the Satellite TV Providers for an all-digital service. Satellite providers operate with less regulation by local governments than cable companies, which often have less operational space to raise their rates. Though not mentioned frequently, satellite TV companies also need the additional income that higher rates will bring in to help offset costs of unveiling new digital technologies.
