Satellite TV companies choose MPEG over Microsoft’s Windows Media

Major satellite television companies announced that they will be using MPEG-4 AVC codec as a standard video format for their high-definition television (HDTV) services.

The Satellite TV Companies are pursuing new high-definition television technologies predominantly because of the need for higher efficiency of bandwidth utilization. Advanced video formats like MPEG AVC or Windows Media will allow them to shrink large high-definition files into much smaller ones.

The result will be pleasing for both providers and customers – more video can be sent over the same amount of broadband or wireless bandwidth, thus keeping the cost lower.

Now that the most influential portion of the satellite television industry set on MPEG 4, it is bad news for Microsoft, the company behind competitive Windows Media format. Even Voom, one of the Microsoft’s early supporters, announced it will use the rival MPEG codec starting in mid-2005. Echostar DISH Network will be using MPEG from this fall; DIRECT TV is moving in the same direction as well and has a demonstration of the technology over a satellite transmission already.

Microsoft still hopes that set-top box producers will include support for both formats into their products, potentially allowing media companies the flexibility to use both or even switch to Windows Media over time. Such a move from one technology to another could be a costly one for companies that have already adopted MPEG, though.
