Are You Smart Enough for Satellite TV?» Are You Smart Enough for Satellite TV?Trivia programs and game shows have long been a staple of American television. In fact, they date long before satellite and HD, and even before the invention of television itself: many popular radio shows quizzed and queried invited guests about just about anything. Contemporary television has not given up the genre. At this point Jeopardy! is a classic, if a bit of a dinosaur, and more recently Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? had mass audiences taking a keen interest in trivia of all kinds. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and host Regis Philbin appealed to American intelligence. Anyone with a telephone and lightning fingers was free to try to get on the show, and for many regular Americans it felt like a million bucks was no more than that phone call away. This show praised and rewarded knowledge, with question topics ranging from sports to politics to current events. It uplifted education. And it felt like anyone could do it. At any rate, the first couple of questions tended to be ones that the general public could answer, and it felt good to know that you could have reached a certain level, even if the questions that followed went beyond the average knowledge of most folks. More recently a new show has put a subtle twist on the trivia format. Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? (apparently having a title that includes punctuation is a common trend for such shows) pits adults against the long forgotten tower of grade-school knowledge. In many ways it is proof that the things we learn as schoolchildren are not all that important to retain to get by in the “real world” of adult responsibility. However, I feel that it also reminds us not to underestimate youth and their extraordinary powers of recall, and their extensive knowledge regarding history and geography that fades for so many of us with each passing year. The premise of the show – asking adults questions from primary school, while a gaggle of fifth graders giggles and scribbles down their own answers, sometimes helping and sometimes exasperated by the featured adult – has a bit of a kitsch feeling to it, but the questions are so familiar that it’s hard not to be drawn in. Be careful on a Sunday, because if you flip away from the NFL Sunday Ticket during a commercial break and come across this show on satellite TV, you may be so bewitched that you’ll end up missing the third quarter! I think back to how much I knew about dinosaurs as a 10-year-old – scientific names and geologic eras. Where does that knowledge go? The kids on the show have grown up with HD, cell phones, and internet, but obviously their brains haven’t been rotted by these technological innovations as some people so greatly fear. Television must not be the culprit for loss of knowledge, but rather some other change we go through as we grow up and re-prioritize what information is most important. Personally, I am not too concerned that I couldn’t remember who the longest reigning British monarch in history was (it was Queen Victoria, to save you a Google search), but I am happy to watch the glee of children and the dismay of adults when they realize they aren’t unequivocally smarter than a fifth grader. Why Satellite TV Beats Cable» Why Satellite TV Beats CableThere are three choices available to you for TV viewing enjoyment. Air-to-ground TV programming was once the only method available; today, it still exists, but has been largely eclipsed by other technologies. Cable companies stole much of the thunder (and viewing audience) from air-to-ground stations, though a few diehard watchers still tune into their local channels through rabbit ear antennas. Cable provided a better selection of channels for viewing. However, technology has marched on, relentlessly. Today, cable is going the way of air-to-ground stations, eclipsed by satellite TV technology. Why is satellite TV a better choice of your viewing enjoyment than cable? Let’s look at the subject in greater detail. Picture Quality – Satellite TV is purely digital, unlike that sent out by many cable companies who still use an outdated analog signal. Of course, analog signal ends this year. To compensate, cable companies are charging their customers more for channels they already receive, just for the privilege of viewing them in a digital format. Satellite TV has always been digital, so watchers will experience no difference. Channel Selection – Satellite providers currently offer far more channels than cable companies do. This means that whatever you want to watch, you will find it on satellite TV. Whether you enjoy historical/scientific discourse (the Science Channel, Discovery and History Channel) or you enjoy pop culture, music, movies, local channels or sports, you will find it all with satellite TV providers. Additionally, satellite TV offers better channel packages than cable companies do. This means that you can customize your viewing experience and get the package that best suits your needs. HD channel selection is another huge factor in the choice between cable and satellite providers. Currently, cable companies offer slightly more than 60 HD channels. Contrast that the 100 HD channels offered by satellite providers. That number is set to grow, as well, while cable companies will remain largely static due to bandwidth constraints. HD is the way of the future for TV viewing and satellite companies are firmly on board. Keep Your Satellite System Ideal» Keep Your Satellite System IdealA few years back, I made the smart decision to switch to a satellite TV connection, and ever since I have been improving my package and in-house set up. Starting off with just a minimal arrangement—no HD TV, the most basic package, etc.—by now I have turned my home entertainment system into a magnet that attracts a lot more than just the people living in my home. With all the great features I’ve found on satellite, I am enjoying the tube in a way I thought impossible; I’ll share just a few of the best of those features with you here. They just might convince you to switch, too. • To start, there’s the infinite amount of programming on at all times of the day. Unlike what most people have been accustomed to for years, with a satellite connection you’ll be flipping through stations from all parts of the country and abroad, too; the rubrics are varied and allow for many different tastes to be satisfied. Nobody will lack interesting programming on satellite. That pretty much sums it up for me. If you’re at all like me, a family man with rather common tastes, you two will find the sort of joy my family and I have found with our satellite connection. The Benefits of Satellite TV Defined» The Benefits of Satellite TV DefinedIf you are currently a cable customer, or have been wavering about choosing satellite TV for your viewing needs, there is no better time to make the switch than right now. Why should you opt for satellite TV programming? What does it offer you for your enjoyment? Is satellite TV really the best choice for any consumer? Who can get this type of TV programming? Here, you will find the answers to your questions to help you understand why this switch is in your best interest. Lower Your Bills – In these harsh economic times, cutting costs is of vital importance. However, when that cost cutting puts your TV content in jeopardy, it can be a difficult choice to make. Actually, opting to ditch the cable company and signing up with a satellite provider will help you lower your bills, while simultaneously increasing your programming. That’s right; you get more channels, for less money each month than you would with your current cable company. More Channels – As mentioned, with satellite providers, you get more channels for your enjoyment. These include the best digital satellite music channels, pay-per-view movies, interactive news and weather channels, the best HD channels and the largest selection of standard definition channels you’ll find anywhere. While your cable company may offer 180 channels, the right satellite provider can almost double that, while still allowing you to pay less each month! Better HD Content – Have you ever wondered if there was more HD content available than the measly 80 channels offered by the cable company? In fact, there are many more available, including national and local HD channels. Only through satellite TV can you gain access to all of these channels and the incredible enjoyment they offer you. You’ll find HD pay-per-view channels, HD movie channels, HD local channels and even national networks broadcast in pristine HD format. Better Customer Service – The cable company has never been known for their quality customer service. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons cited for customers changing TV programming providers. DirecTV has the number 1 rated customer service department in the nation, ensuring that when you need to speak with someone, you are connected to a person who actually cares what you have to say. Get a DVR – Free! – Chances are that your cable company does offer a DVR solution. However, you’re probably paying an excessive fee for the privilege or recording your programs. In addition, it’s unlikely that you have an HD DVR. With the right satellite provider, you get a free DVR, which can actually record up to 50 hours of HD content, or 200 hours of standard definition TV. That’s a pretty dramatic difference. Which satellite provider should you choose? The answer to that question has also been mentioned above. If you missed it, DirecTV should be the provider you choose. Their customer service, channel selection, dedication to providing the best sports programming and their ongoing commitment to developing the best HD content sets them apart from other choices. Satellite TV: Technological Advantages» Satellite TV: Technological AdvantagesIn the span of human history, television is still a baby technology – less than a century old. Although newer generations can hardly imagine a world without it, plenty of people can still remember its invention and introduction. Of course, even those who can remember life before TV probably now have a hard time imagining life without it. Despite its relative youth, TV is part of the age of technology, and as such it has undergone many major changes and improvements through the past few decades. Black and white was soon irreversibly replaced by glowing color, and with time the Technicolor faded reasonably into the tones of reality. Screen sizes have grown and are still growing – 6 inch screens have expanded to home theaters that impose themselves across an entire wall. Resolution has improved from grainy fuzz to high definition perfection. Some of the most important and impressive technological improvements have happened behind the scenes, and are not immediately evident in a TV set itself. These advances involve the way that television is broadcast and distributed. Currently, the whole world is in the process of changing from analog broadcast to digital, with the United States joining the ranks of a handful of other countries that have fully made the switch. Even bigger than that adjustment, however, was the advent of satellite TV. Satellite TV has many technological advantages that have improved the viewing experience of millions and millions of people. For one thing, it can reach more people than any other method. No matter how remote you are, satellite TV can reach you, beaming in hundreds of channels that would be otherwise unavailable. For people living in wooded valleys or rural communities, this is an unparalleled opportunity to receive great programming and entertainment. The sound and picture quality of satellite TV is also better than with other, older methods. This is a standard that is always being raised, as more and more stations broadcast in high definition. For today’s adolescents, it must be nearly impossible to imagine a time when the best technology could only produce silent, monochrome pictures. The sheer number of choices is another development that continues to expand. Some of this programming is available only with satellite TV packages. The best example of this is the NFL Sunday Ticket. Sports fans can’t find such a good deal anywhere else. Subscribers receive up to 14 games each week, compared to only 4 on cable. Even if football isn’t your cup of tea, with hundreds of channels there is something for everyone. As you can see, technology has made leaps and bounds since television was first born. To sum up all the advantages discussed here, the most important one is that satellite makes your other investments worthwhile. If you have a big HDTV flat screen and surround-sound speakers, you want to be able to watch anything you choose and receive a level of quality equal to your equipment. The best way to enjoy modern television technology is with the many advantages of satellite TV. Satellite TV and the Road to the Super Bowl» Satellite TV and the Road to the Super BowlAs a complete football fanatic (and sports nut in general), every season I do my utmost to keep up to speed on all the games played and players’ stats possible, always trying to predict the likely contenders for the most epic of all football face-offs: the Super Bowl. This year, after many years of wading through sketchy sports dives and unreliable online sportscasters, I decided to change things up and get all my football satisfaction at home with a satellite TV subscription. Let’s just say, I’ve never been so on top of the season in my entire life! Among the many optional sports packages available to me—which, seeing as we’re talking about satellite here, are all vastly superior to their cable kin—I was most keen on the NFL Sunday Ticket, which has unleashed upon my TV room a veritable universe of NFL action. The investment has been the wisest of all in my many years of being a sports aficionado. The fact that I was getting every Sunday game of the NFL, simultaneously, was just a shock too powerful to describe. That I could then set-up my own selection of several games to watch, live, all at the same time on one screen was what nearly killed me. But I survived the initial onslaught of this formidable package, and trudged on to learn more about how I could make the experience even better…as unbelievable as that may sound. Additional, optional features like the players’ stats and games stats, and the pre-game coaches’ talks are the icing on the cake. My head was nearly exploding with information from all the valuable stats being thrown at me; I ended up resorting to keeping my own charts just to absorb it all. Of course, the fact that all of this is broadcast in high definition for my superior viewing pleasure can’t be forgotten. Compared to the many games watched in standard definition in the days of yore, I feel like my current experience with sports programming is turning me into a new person. A better person. I have been able to see just about all the action so far this season, and have been superbly prepared for the Super Bowl by all the benefits of having the Sunday Ticket. Though the Cardinals, and to a lesser degree the Steelers, are not who most thought of as the contenders, I can honestly say that I had foreseen these two teams rising—or at least having the mettle to rise—to be finalists this year. Of course, the Super Bowl is going be big a big affair in my house; with the set up I have, I am already a magnet for sports lovers all over town. But once the game is over and done with, I will order the Sunday Ticket again next season, and the one after that, too, simply because there is no better way for me to enjoy the game. No matter who makes it to the Super Bowl in coming years, I know I’ll be pretty likely to see them coming, too. DirecTV Gives You More, More, More» DirecTV Gives You More, More, MoreThere’s just no doubting it: DirecTV gives people so much more to choose from than any other provider, whether of satellite TV or cable services. No other company has as many exclusive packages, nor as many channels, nor as much variety in its lineup, and these are precisely the qualities that have made it so incredibly successful in the national (and international) marketplace. In fact, in neighborhoods all over the country, it’s conspicuous how many new houses have a dish on their roof with the DirecTV logo on it; a tangible, measurable sign of just how great the service being offered really is. DirecTV is all about more, more more. More quality, more variety, more exclusivity, and more customer loyalty, too. More action, more romance, more adventure, and more movies on DirecTV are only some of the many great reasons that each year there are so many converts to this exceptional service. Every genre is represented, and not just with a token show or movie, but with scores of channels practically exclusively dedicated to that particular taste. Love movies in general? Well then you’ll be happier than a pig in mud with the fact that you get HBO, Starz, Showtime, TMC, and a whole host of other channels that only play movies. Love action? You’ll be blown away by channels like Spike or AXN that cater particularly to that taste. Love adventure? Well, you’ll be delighted with the superior programming to be had on channels like the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the Science Channel, and many more that help viewers explore our natural world and beyond in ways that will simply take your breath away—anybody that has seen the mini-series Planet Earth on Discovery Channel knows what this is all about. In fact, DirecTV also gives you more sports than any other provider, whether they be of cable or satellite TV. More live games than you could ever imagine, from more parts of the country than any other provider offers (remember, cable companies usually only show local or regional games, whereas satellite brings you a much more global, complete portfolio of games). And the vast majority of it is all brought to you in stunning HD quality, which makes it all that much more exciting to watch. Add on to all these great aspects the fact that you can use interactive channels to watch up to eight games at the same time, live, or also get “Big Play” alerts and follow the stats of your favorite players, and you’ve got a package that exceeds all possible expectations. And how it does! So, if you are looking to get more out of your television service, then stopping fooling around with providers that only offer you less, and become part of the community that has it all ( it sure is hard to have more than that). All your hankerings will be satiated and you will find yourself immersed in a universe of television options you never had even imagined existed before, all of a quality that simply cannot be equaled by any other player on the market. Showing Them Who’s Boss with Satellite TV» Showing Them Who’s Boss with Satellite TVIf you’ve been ashamed of your home entertainment system for time immemorial, then you need to seriously consider getting a satellite TV connection. I myself was once the disgraced owner of a ’70s-era, grainy tube set with a flimsy antenna rod sticking off my roof, lop-sided. I had about three stations that came through with nominally good image quality, and if I smacked my TV enough, I could actually get both in-set speakers to reproduce sound like they were supposed to. After enough humiliation, however, I finally decided last year to bring myself up to date with what I saw around me, and I ventured to get a satellite connection…despite my wife’s misgivings! There have been few events in my life that changed my in-house existence so dramatically. Within less than 48 hours of having put in my order, I was sitting on my sofa, eyes as big as the brand new dish perched on my roof (mind you, not at all lop-sided), absolutely awed by what I was witnessing. Of course, there was one big change I had to make before the guys came in and installed my service: I had to get rid of that ridiculous, trunk-sized tube I had had for almost four decades. Knowing that I was about to get a tidal wave of HD-madness unleashed on me, I went out and got a plasma screen flat-panel—at 50”, it almost doubles the screen size of my previous set—and what a difference it has made. So, with my sparklingly brilliant plasma set up on the wall, I had the boys come in and install my service, which was a ridiculously quick affair: set the dish, run the cables, switch on the decoder, and connect to the TV…and voila! I was in business in much less time than I had predicted it would take. To really maximize my enjoyment, I made sure to consult what programming packages were available in my area—psht, this is satellite, and the only area is the entire planet—and ordered a couple of extras that I really wanted; after all, so many decades of barely getting anything at all had made me hunger like no other for a great set of channels. I was amazed at what was being offered me: the most incredible sports packages, practically all in HD, as well as a slew of other fantastic movie and entertainment channels. The sports really did it for me, though, as the biggest cause for my previous shame had come from my inability to even watch the most widely broadcast games at home. So, I went ahead and got a few packages I was keen on, like the NFL Sunday Ticket, which now has me glued to my set every Sunday for hours at a time. With all these elements brilliantly assembled in my shiny new home entertainment system—oops, can’t forget about the surround sound system, which really took it all over the top—I invited my buddies and extended family over to show them who was boss. The looks on their faces conveyed exactly the sort of reaction I had been hoping to get: absolute shock and awe. Nobody in the room had a set up nearly as sweet as my own, and I had gone from technological troglodyte to wizard in less than a week. Let’s just say it was one of the most satisfying moments of my life; other than every moment I spend with my lovely new set up, that is!
